The Ismaili Centre and Aga Khan Museum

Toronto, Ontario

Project Description

The Aga Khan Museum presents and collects art from historically significant Muslim civilizations and contemporary Muslim communities around the world. The building has two large exhibition galleries, art conservation and storage spaces, a 350-seat theatre and classrooms.

Light is the inspiration for the architecture of the building, acting as a vessel that is animated and sculpted by casting patterns on the exterior walls and enhancing interior spaces or illuminating the open-roofed courtyard.

The Ismaili Centre includes a prayer hall, administrative offices, school area, meeting rooms, main council chamber room, associated kitchen areas, reception, and a two-level underground parking garage with 300 parking spaces.

The glass roof in the prayer hall was designed to work with the ever-changing lighting conditions presented by the natural sunlight. The prayer hall inspires users to connect physically and spiritually with the sky above and the ground below.
