Spadina and Sussex Residence, University of Toronto

Toronto, Ontario

Project Description

Led by the University of Toronto in partnership with The Daniels Corporation, this is a 23-storey student residence project in downtown Toronto.

The residence will accommodate 511 beds in a combination of dorm and suite-style rooms and will also include 10 stacked townhouse units (19 beds) with one level of underground parking. Other highlights include common amenities, food services, administrative, servicing and retail spaces at grade.

The Spadina and Sussex Residence is an example of how future buildings will be designed to meet the University of Toronto's goal of becoming a carbon-neutral campus.

Make up air is provided to the building by make up air units located in the penthouse that utilize enthalpy wheels for heat recovery. Heat pumps connected to the Robert Street geothermal field provide heating and cooling for the make up air units, terminal units, and domestic hot water heating. This approach eliminates the need to utilize natural gas in the building.

We are honoured to be part of this project, providing Mechanical and Electrical design focused on an exemplary sustainability approach.

The project is pursuing LEED Silver Certification and Toronto Green Standard Tier 1.
