Kipling Acres

Etobicoke, Ontario

Project Description

Kipling Acres is a modern, best-practice long-term care home dedicated to an integrated, community-based approach to seniors’ health and wellness. In addition to its 337 beds, the home features many pioneering additions, including art and music therapy suites, seniors’ community centre, chapel and auditorium, children’s daycare, adult day centre, flex spaces for partnerships with local service providers and college care programs, as well as a large, secure courtyard where these programs converge. The courtyard itself includes gardens, walkways, barbeques, and ample seating as well as a bandshell for live performances. Widely praised for its intergenerational programming, Kipling has catalyzed retrofits across the City.

Crossey Engineering Ltd. provided Mechanical and Electrical design services for the Kipling Acres Redevelopment project.

Phase 1 saw the original building replaced by a new three-storey, 192 resident long-term care home which includes seniors’ independent living, assisted living and other complementary community services.

Phase 2 includes four 32-bed resident home areas featuring private rooms to allow for an individualized and quiet accommodation for residents. The facility also includes a ground-floor 17-bed convalescent care program.

Other highlights include a community-supported Adult Day Program, a 36 space Children’s Daycare Centre, West Acres Senior Centre which offers wellness and recreation programs for local community seniors and an Intergenerational Garden which the residents share with the West Acres Community Centre.

Kipling Acres is fully sprinklered. Major mechanical systems include a combination of hot water perimeter heating using runtal type radiators and radiant in-floor heating, rooftop air handling units with humidifiers located in the penthouse and rooftop, an air-cooled chiller system and a domestic hot water heating system for resident and kitchen/laundry use. Electrical power systems include an emergency power diesel generator and the electrical low voltage systems include nurse call, fire alarm and security systems.
