CEL Gruen is a consulting engineering group focused on integrated sustainable and renewable design, energy simulation, and LEEDTM consulting. We firmly believe that good engineering is "green". It is our objective to bring the appropriate sustainable solutions to each of our projects.
Specializing in the application of sustainable technologies, the Gruen team integrates the analysis of design options into the earliest phases of conceptual design. Early simulation of building energy performance allows systems to be compared and appropriately evaluated. CEL Gruen customizes our analysis, design and post-construction support to meet your needs. The services that we provide include: - LEEDTM Consulting
- Sustainable System Design and Analysis
- Building Audits
- Master Planning
- Construction Support
- Feasibility Studies
- Peer Review
LEEDTM LEEDTM Accredited Professionals work in the CEL Gruen team. Gruen has provided a variety of support levels for various LEEDTM projects including energy analysis, mechanical and electrical design interface, conceptual review, peer review, and design documentation. LEEDTM projects that CEL Gruen have involved with include: - University of Windsor Medical Education Building - Windsor, Ontario
- Ronald MacDonald House - Toronto, Ontario
- Durham College Skills Training Centre - Oshawa, Ontario
- Holy Blossom - Toronto, Ontario
- Lakefield College - Peterborough, Ontario
- sanofi R&D Facility - Toronto, Ontario
- University of Toronto Student Centre, Scarborough Campus - Toronto, Ontario
- Brookside Public School (TDSB) - Toronto, Ontario
- Centennial College Athletic and Wellness Centre - Toronto, Ontario
- Ecole Secondaire de Barrie - Barrie, Ontario
- North Toronto Collegiate (TDSB) - Toronto, Ontario
- University of Toronto Health Science Building - Mississauga, Ontario
- Guelph Civic Centre - Guelph, Ontario
- Southbrook Winery - Niagara, Ontario
- Lakehead University, Orillia Campus - Orillia, Ontario
Energy Simulations: Gruen energy simulators use a variety of software tools suitable for the task including EE4 (LEEDTM), Carrier HAP (Load and Energy calculations), RETScreen (renewable energy), Polysun (solar thermal), Ground Loop Designer (Geothermal Energy) and others. Analysis is provided for design, sizing, life cycle cost analysis and grant applications. Our team has been involved many energy simulations for the former CBIP program, and more recently for LEEDTM compliance and new energy incentives noted below. The following is a list of projects completed with approval from NRCan, and other projects that are currently in the design process or awaiting approval. - Ronald MacDonald House - Toronto, Ontario
- Durham College Skills Training Centre - Oshawa, Ontario
- Canadore College/Nipissing University Library - North Bay, Ontario
- University of Windsor Medical Education Building - Windsor, Ontario
- North Oshawa Recreation Complex - Oshawa, Ontario

Sustainable Technology Application: In an effort to promote sustainable design, a number of renewable and energy efficient technologies have been promoted and implemented on many of our recent projects. These technologies include, but are not limited to: - Solar Thermal Heating Systems (evacuated and glazed flat plate collectors)
- Geothermal Heating Systems
- Ice Storage For Reducing Peak Loads
- Green Wall (Living Wall) System
- Stormwater Reuse System for domestic demand and irrigation
- Automated External Solar Blind Systems
- Heat/Energy Recovery Systems
- Demand control systems using CO2 sensors
- Automated Natural Ventilation Systems
Not only has the group designed these systems, but we have also completed the necessary documentation for grants and incentives offered by multiple organizations including NRCan, EcoEnergy, Enbridge, OPA, High Performance New Construction and others. Whether we are providing analysis, design or construction support, we work closely with clients by: - Facilitating discussions between all key stakeholders so that everyone comes to a common understanding of the critical design issues and timetables.
- Keeping the design team members who start projects involved through to the project's completion so that key targets and goals identified during design are consistently achieved.
- Dedicating an experienced team to projects (i.e. including Partners' and senior designers) so that practical and cost-effective solutions are developed and applied.
- Our team based approach ensures that the knowledge that we have learned from previous projects is available to all of our Project Managers.
- Ensuring the Project Manager is fully accessible so that any concerns can be addressed efficiently.
